Spotify introduces customizable AI-generated playlists

Spotify has introduced an innovative AI playlist feature in beta, allowing users in the U.K. and Australia to create custom playlists through written prompts. This feature, accessible on Android and iOS devices, goes beyond traditional playlist creation by enabling requests for unique mixes like "songs to serenade my cat" or "beats to battle a zombie apocalypse." Users can craft prompts using a mix of genres, moods, artists, and decades for optimal results. Spotify's AI, powered by large language models (LLMs), interprets these prompts, combining them with the user's listening history and preferences to generate personalized playlists. Users can further refine their playlists with commands such as "less upbeat" or "more pop," and remove unwanted tracks by swiping left.

The technology behind this feature includes third-party tools for AI and machine learning, enhancing Spotify's streaming service. This development follows the global success of Spotify's AI DJ, which personalizes song introductions using a mix of technologies from Sonantic and OpenAI. CEO Daniel Ek has hinted at further AI integrations, including summarizing podcasts and creating AI-generated audio ads. Unlike its predecessor, Niche Mixes, the AI playlist feature leverages advanced language understanding for a broader range of prompts. Spotify ensures the AI has safeguards against offensive prompts and does not engage with current events or specific brands. This feature represents Spotify's ongoing investment in AI to enrich user experience, offering a glimpse into future innovations in streaming and content personalization.
